The great opportunities of Greece for yachting are universally recognized. There are more than 2,000 islands scattered only in the Aegean Sea. In many spots in the Aegean and Ionian Seas that surround Greece, it is possible to rent a yacht.

Generally, the following yachting areas are distinguished: Ionian Sea, Saronix and Argolikos Bays, Cyclades, Dodecanese, Sporades, North-East Aegean Islands. Each of these areas has its own characteristics that must be taken into account when planning a yacht trip. For example, the Ionian Sea in its climatic and wind conditions is more similar to Croatia than to Aegean Sea, a large part of the Greek area. When planning trips to the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, one must realize that there are bound to be long passages between the islands. Summer travel in the Aegean inevitably involves Meltemi winds and no calm weather is to be expected.

Read more about the features of yachting in each area in the section relating to the appropriate region.

Winds in Greece

In the Greek yachting areas, the wind conditions are determined by three main winds: Meltemi, which blows in the Aegean Sea; Maistro, which blows in the Ionian Sea and the southerly winds that cover all Greek yachting areas.

Sailing itineraris in Greece

Yacht itineraries in the waters of the Greek seas can be of varying difficulty and duration. From the simplest weekend sailings in Saronikos Gulf from Athens, to long voyages with more than a day's crossings through several regions of Greece. However, since we focus mainly on yachtsmen travelling on charter yachts, we will primarily consider one- or two-week itineraries with start and finish at the charter companis location.

Requirements for skipper of charter yacht

For renting a yacht in Greece, it is necessary that at least one crew member has a license to operate a yacht recognized by the Greek authorities - RYA, IYT, National Certificate, etc. The skipper's certificate must permit not only day sailing, but also night sailing. I am not aware of any cases when a skipper is required to have a radio operator's license when renting a yacht. The Greeks are quite strict about the requirement to have at least 2 people on the yacht and the second person also has the skills to operate the yacht. If the second skipper does not have a license to operate the yacht, the charter company where you rent the yacht will ask the skipper to write a statement that the second skipper has sufficient skills to operate the yacht. The statement is signed by the first and second skipper.

Charter sights in Greece

You can rent a bareboat, bareboat with skipper or full crew on the Aegean and Ionian Sea in Greece. However, you have to remember that when renting a yacht without crew, as a rule, you have to return the yacht in the same place where you rented it. In Greece, this is more of a plus than a minus, because when you travel around the islands, you can easily plan circular yachting itineraries, with reduced for travel costs. However, renting yachts for "one way" itinerary is also possible, especially at the end of the season when charter companies gather scattered at different areas yachts to the main base. The largest number of yachts available for bareboat charter are in the Aegean Sea, in Athens, and in the Ionian Sea, on the islands of Corfu and Lefkas.
