Port Ios is located on the west coast of the island 6.5 miles from its southern tip. It is easily identified by the white town on top of the hill and two windmills below.
On approach, yacht skippers need to keep a close eye on the high-speed ferries constantly entering the harbor. As Meltemi increases in the harbor, there are frequent wind gusts that can make mooring difficult.
In the harbor yachts can be moored in three sites.
1 - to the eastern waterfront, where there are mooring lines.
The chain to which the moorings are attached runs north-south and is marked by a yellow buoy. Use as many fenders as possible and pull the boat away from the waterfront, because the ferries arrive at speed and create a big wave.
2 - It is also possible to moored the yacht on the north waterfront in the evening, once the ferries stop running.
This pier is controlled by the port police. This is a mooring on its own anchor. The bottom is muddy. Holding is good. It is also possible to moor yachts on the north side.
3 - yachts are moored to the north side of the west pier, covering a small shallow harbor for local boats.
The usual facilities are available on the waterfront, and there is everything that you could possibly need in town (including Camping Gas in Chora).
Anchoring in the bay is prohibited because of the many high-speed ferries that serve the island.
