Pantokratoras Mountain

Mountain Pantokratoras (translated from Greek as "Lord Almighty") is located in the north-east of the island of Corfu. Its height is 906 meters above sea level and it is the highest mountain on the island. From the top of the mountain you have a great panoramic view. At the very top of the mountain is a small cozy cafe for tourists, where you can relax after the ascent and then explore the surrounding area. There are also telecommunications towers and an ancient monastery. The first religious structure was built on this site in 1347, but in 1537 the temple was destroyed for unknown reasons. The monastery of the Transfiguration, which we see today, dates from about 1689, although the facade of the building was built in the 19th century. In the church you can see magnificent ancient frescoes.

You can climb to the top of Mountain Pantocrator by foot or by car. There are several hiking trails, the most convenient of which lead to the monastery. The best starting point for the ascent is the village of Old Peritheia, which is the oldest village on the island and dates back to the 14th century. The ascent by foot will take about two hours. When you travel by car, you should consider that the road is very narrow and has many steep turns.
