Meganisi Island

Meganisi is one of the Greek Ionian Islands, located in the so-called Inner Sea a mile off the north-east coast of Lefkas. The island has about 2,000 inhabitants, most of them in the village of Spartochori and Port Spilia, which is now the main ferry port. The island is very popular with yachtsmen who travel on yachts rented from one of the charter companies in Lefkas Marina.

Yacht services are well developed on the island with over 50 berths at pontoons in Port Spilia, over 80 berths at Vathi Harbor and about 70 yachts can be moored at the pontoons of Odiseas Marina.

The main and most popular anchorages on Meganisi are located along the north-east coast of the island near Vathi harbor. These are the bays of Kapali, Abelike and Port Athens. Between them there are about 20 different bays in which a yacht can anchor, usually with lines to ashore. The bottom is mostly muddy with seaweed and the anchor holds well once it passes through the seaweed. Shelter in all three locations is good during the prevailing north-west winds, although there is often a little swell in the afternoon. Occasionally a north-east wind appears at night, which can be inconvenient but rarely dangerous.
