Paleokastritsa is a picturesque resort on the island of Corfu, located 26 km north-west of the capital Corfu. Previously Paleokastritsa was an independent municipality of Ionian Islands, but since 2011 it is an administrative unit of Corfu town. The territory of Paleokastritsa stretches along the coastline of Corfu Island, washed by the Adriatic Sea, and covers an area of 48.379 sq. km. There is the monastery of the Virgin Mary in Paleokastritsa.

The structure that we see today dates from the 16th-18th centuries, but the first building on this site was founded in 1225 and was an ancient fortress. It was destroyed in 1403, but in 1469 it was rebuilt again. In 1537 the fortress was completely destroyed by the Turks, and in 1572 the monastery was built again. In this form it survives to this day, part of which was added in 1722. Today in the building of the monastery there is a Museum, which presents ancient Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons.
