Skala harbor is located on the east coast of Patmos in the bay of Skala, which is deeply cut into the island.
Skala is a fairly safe harbor during Meltemi, despite the strong wind gusts. Skala Bay is open to the south-east and during the winter months it is not always possible to moor yachts here.
The main mooring place for yachts in Skala is the long west waterfront to north of the city beach. Depths on the waterfront are 2.75 meters at the south end before the turn and 3.8 to 4.25 meters along the remaining part of the waterfront to the north. According to some reports, the depths at the far end of the city waterfront are about 7.5 meters. The waterfront closer to the city is reserved for ferries and commercial boats. During strong northern winds, mooring on the embankment can become uncomfortable due to crosswind gusts. Yachts are moored to the waterfront at their own anchor with their stern or bow to the pier. Holding is good on muddy bottom.
In the north-east corner of the bay there is an unfinished marina, which theoretically could accommodate about 50 yachts if pontoons and fixed moorings were installed. The depths along the north wall are over 3 meters and at the breakwater about 3 meters at the root and 7 meters at the south end. The marina is almost filled with local boats. The marina is quite far from town.
There are many restaurants, cafes, and stores in Skala, as well as higher up in Chora.
