Attractions of Patmos Island

Constructed on top of a hill above Chora, the Orthodox Monastery of Saint John the Theologian is among the most important religious centers in Greece. It looks like a fortress but inside there is a monastery, built on the site of an ancient temple.

Tradition says that in this cave, Apostle John wrote the Book of Revelation, inspired by God. An entire monastery has been built around this cave.

Arki and Marathi are two remote islands daily connected to Patmos by boat. There have few inhabitants and they are known for their crystal beaches, accessed only on foot.

This female Monastery is dedicated to Virgin Mary the life giver. It is located in close distance to the Monastery of Saint John.

Agathonisi is the northernmost island of the Dodecanese. It is a tiny island with a few inhabitants. Tourist amenities are few on Agathonisi, as it is not at all touristically developed. However, it is ideal for some relaxation.

This small church is located in the village of Kambos and it is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. It has nice frescoes inside and rare icons.

The Patmiada Scholi (Patmian School) is located near the Cave of the Apocalypse on Patmos Island. The foundation of the Patmian School also referred to as the General School of the Nation was the most important event of the 18th century.

The Monastery of Panagia in the region Livadi Kalogiron is located amidst lush greenery and close to the sea. It used to be an ascetic spot but then a monastery was constructed.

This museum is located in the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian in Chora Patmos. It is a small museum housing all the treasures of the monastery, including valuable icons, ecclesiastical ornaments, embroideries, superb icons and clothing of priests.

This small church is located in the village of Grikos, 5 km from Chora. It is a lovely whitewashed church built upon the ruins of ancients public baths, where many believe that Saint John was baptizing Christians.

The Folklore Museum of Patmos is housed in Simantiri Mansion, Chora, which was constructed in 1625. It hosts furniture, paintings, photographs, family relics, and other valuable items.
