Kalymnos is a Greek island in the Dodecanese archipelago (Southern Sporades), located in the eastern Aegean Sea, 6 miles north-west of Kos and 10 miles west of the Turkish Bodrum Peninsula. The island is mountainous, with the highest point, the 760-meter-high Mount Elijah the Prophet at the center of the island. The island is popular among rock climbers.
The coastline is quite rugged. There are several ports where yachts can be moored at the pier and many anchorages. The island's capital and main ferry port, Kalymnos (Potia), is located in a large natural bay in the south of the island. There is a local airport on the island.
In the late ninth and early twentieth centuries, Kalymnos was the center of sponge mining. Recently, the share of tourism in the island's economy has been increasing. The island holds the famous International Rock Climbing Festival every two years and the Kalymnos Diving Festival every summer.
