Attractions of Kalymnos Island

The amazing mountainous and steep landscape of Kalymnos provides a great opportunity to experience rock climbing. In fact, there is a climbing school on the island and an International Climbing Festival is regularly held, gaining popularity over time.

Kalymnos had a long tradition in sponge fishing in the past, but today it has only a few sponge factories in Pothia. There you can get informed on the process of collecting and elaborating sponges.

Valsamidis Sea World Museum was founded by Valsamidis brothers and it is situated in Vlychadia village. Its remarkable private collection consists of items that are related to the marine world.

This small island was separated from Kalymnos due to an earthquake in 535 A.D. Telendos has a single settlement with 50 inhabitants and a nice landscape to stroll around. It is connected to Kalymnos by boat from Myrties.

The beautiful church of Agios Savvas is located on top of a hill, 2 km south of Pothia, so it offers an amazing view of the town and the port. It is made of stone in the shape of cross and has round domes.

This castle was built by the Knights of Saint John and it is also called the Citadel of the Knights. A little chapel to Panagia Chrysochera is found in the castle, which is located on a hill above Pothia.

This private Folklore Museum is located about 1,5 km from Pothia, on the way to Vothoni. It is a representation of a traditional Kalymnian house with agricultural tools, traditional clothes, kitchen utensils, and other items.

This fine church in Pothia has wonderful frescoes and icons inside, made by local artists. The iconostasis is the work of a famous artist from Tinos, Giannoulis Chalepas.

The Monastery of Agioi Pantes is located on a hill 2 km south of Pothia, close to the church of Agios Savvas. They give a great view of the town. The church is white in color and has red tiled round domes.

The Archaeological Museum of Kalymnos is housed in a beautiful mansion constructed in the 19h century. It exhibits a prehistoric collection with ceramics, tools and statues, sculpture from the historical times and traditional furniture of the 19th century.
