Kastos is a low, long and narrow little island covered with olive trees. It is also a great place for fishing. There are only fifty permanent residents on the island, although in summer the population rises to 500 when friends and relatives come here.
Kastos has the maximum width of 900 meters and a surface area of six square kilometers. It has many low hills, the highest of which does not exceed 150 meters. The west coast of the island is rocky, while the east coast has many small beaches that can be reached from land or sea. They are Ambelakia and Fyki in the south, Vali, Koilada, Ayios Aimilianos, Limni, Kamini and Vrisidi ...
There are only a few roads on the island, and for this reason there are no cars. The distances are very short, and people get around by foot and, of course, by boat. Each inhabitant of the island has his own boat. Saracen Bay, a natural bay in the west of the island, also has a small breakwater, which makes it possible for boats to moor even in bad weather, so that the island will not be cut off by strong south winds.
In Kalikerimi there is an olive grove with very old olive trees. They are tall with thick trunks and giant roots that indicate they must be several hundred years old. In Ayios Aymilianos, a little north of the port of Kastos, there is a small cave, Fokotrypa (Seal Hole) about 30 meters deep with a small amount of sand inside it. From the name of the cave we can conclude that seals sought refuge here in the past. The island's trails provide pleasant quite walks.
The view from the path along the ridge to the north is exceptional. In addition, the small road, which was recently built, provides a delightful walk through a green landscape that exudes a sense of tranquility. The ancient remains at Vigla indicate a possible connection of the island with Meganisi and Kalamos from ancient times.
