Sparta is an ancient state in Greece on the south of the Peloponnese peninsula.
Today it is a thriving city, the monuments of the past that exist here will take you only 1-2 hours. These include a theater, ruins of a temple and a small Archaeological Museum. There are fragments of ancient buildings from the 7th century BC to the 2nd century AD: the Acropolis with the Temple of Athena (6th century BC), temples (7th-Vth century BC), theater (1st - 2nd century AD). In ancient times Sparta was one of the most important cities not only in Greece, but also in all of Europe.
Traditionally, tourists are visiting the tomb of Leonidas, the temple of the valiant warrior and king of Sparta. Popular is also the Acropolis of Ancient Sparta, where the greatest number of ancient artifacts was discovered. In ancient times, this place was the political, religious and economical center of the city. Not far from the Acropolis is another point of our stop, the ancient theater. It is the third largest and one of the most impressive theatrical buildings of the ancient world. Also not far from Sparta you can see the ruins of the temple of Athena and the ancient Byzantine monastery of Osios Nikon, built in the 10th century.
You've probably heard more than once about the so-called "class selection" of the ancient Spartans? The unique attraction of the city is the rock from which the frail and not athletic children were thrown into the abyss, thus enriching their population with only sturdy and healthy offspring.
An excursion to Sparta can be planned while sailing in Argolikos Gulf. The closest place to Sparta where you can keep your yacht is Leonidia. A yacht for sailing in Saronikos and Argolikos Gulfs you can rent in Athens (Alimos Marina) or in Lavrion.
