Volcano

Volcano

The Volcano of Nisyros is active and constitutes one of the youngest volcanoes in Greece. It is found close to Nikia village and it is the most visited site on the island.

Paleokastro is a classical period acropolis of the ancient city. It is still in very good condition because of its high-quality construction and represents one of the best fortification works of ancientry, basaltic andesite, one of the hardest rocks in the world.

Venetian Castle

This Castle is also known as the Castle of Panagia Spiliani. It was probably built in the 14th century by the Knights of Saint John and gives a great view of the island.

The name of this Monastery means "Virgin Mary of the Cave". It was probably built in the 15th century and hosts many ecclesiastical relics inside.

Ecclesiastical Museum

Consisting of many heirlooms from the Monastery of Panagia Spiliani and Panagia Potamitissa, the Ecclesiastical museum has an impressive collection. The collection includes chalices, incenses, old gospels dated to the 19th century, ecclesiastical utensils, crosses, and old seals, apart from a host of other items. The museum is housed in the monastery of Panagia Spiliani.

Volcanological Museum

The Volcanological Museum of Nisyros opened in June 2008. It is housed in a small building in Nikia, the closest village to the volcano. It presents photos and information about the volcano of Nisyros and other actove volcanoes around the world.

Folklore Museum

Folklore Museum

This small museum consists of an interesting collection of photographs, traditional costumes, books, icons, and fishing tools, apart from many other items. Located in a two-storey 18th-century building in Mandraki, the museum is on the road which leads to the Panagia Spiliani Monastery.

Archaeological Museum

Archaeological Museum

Housed in a building donated by the Giannidis brothers, the museum contains many artifacts retrieved from various archaeological sites in and around Nisyros. Located next to the Heroes Square at Mandraki, this museum is easily accessible.

Church of Agios Theologos

Church of Agios Theologos

At Nikia village, there is a lovely church dedicated to Virgin Mary. Outside the village, one can see the chapel of Agios Theologos, the church that has an imposing bell tower and a view of the magnificent volcano of Nisyros.
