Astypalaia Island

Astypalaia is one of the islands of the Dodecanese archipelago (South Sporades). Astypalaia is located in the south-east part of the Aegean Sea. Astypalaia is the westernmost island of the Dodecanese islands, on the border of the Dodecanese and the Cyclades. The nearest inhabited island, Amorgos, is located 20 miles north-west of Astypalaia.

Astypalaia has a characteristic shape and consists of two parts connected by an isthmus, the width of which at its narrowest point is 130 meters. At the isthmus is the local airport. The island's capital, Astypalaia or Chora, is located on the south-east coast of the western part of the island. The eastern half of the island is deserted.

The coastline of the island is quite indented with many bays, providing good shelter for yachts in all directions of winds.
