The small port of Frikes on the north-east coast of Ithaca Island has a bad reputation as a bay with strong gusts during moderate prevailing winds and large waves from ferries passing by.
Nevertheless, despite these shortcomings, Frikes is a pretty and largely unspoiled village, a good place to stop for the night if the weather is right and reasonable precautions are taken against passing ferries.
Frikes is a good shelter for yachts in all winds except easterly and north-easterly.
1 - Mooring on breakwater
This is a mooring on the inside of the breakwater with a length of 70-80 meters. 6-8 yachts can be moored here at a depth of 2.0 - 2.5 meters at the outer end and only 1.5 meters at the shore (although the depth is somewhat deeper where the boat's keel will be).
Yachts usually hit the sides because of the waves created by passing ferries. The pier is provided with strong bollards and mooring rings. The shelter here is good from the prevailing winds.
2 - Eastern waterfront
This waterfront extends from the breakwater for 30-40 meters to the fishing piers. The depths are mostly 2.0 meters and a little more where the keel of the yacht will be. These are probably the safest moring places in the harbor.
3 - Outside of the breakwater
Only in calm weather, yachts can moor to the outside of the breakwater, where there is room for 8 to 10 yachts with long mooring lines ashore. Mooring lines can be set on stainless steel and iron rings. Holding is good at 10 - 12 meters depth on sand and seaweed.
4 - North Waterfront
Although this waterfront has recently been renovated and is well equipped with stainless steel mooring rings and several bollards, it is most exposed to waves from passing ferries.
