Monastery of Hozoviotissa

This impressive Monastery was built in the 11th century and it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is the trademark of Amorgos island. Built entirely on the slopes of a rock, this monastery gives an amazing view to the sea. A trekking path leads to the nice beach of Agia Anna.

The Archaeological Collection of Amorgos is housed in Gavras Tower, one of the few Venetian towers that have survived on the island. It includes findings from excavation sites on Amorgos, such as Prehistoric tools, marble sculptures, remains of ancient temples and others.

The folklore museum of Amorgos is located in Chora. It is a small museum demonstrating a typical Amorgian house. Admission is free of charge.

On the way from Chora to Kamari, there is a small church dedicated to Agios Georgios Valsamitis. This church was built in the 18th century and it is a dependency of Hozoviotissa Monastery. The location gives a nice view of the sea.

Gavras Tower is an important Venetian remain in Chora, close to the Castle. It was probably built in the 16th century and today it hosts the Archaeological Collection of Amorgos.

About 1-hour hike from Lagada, the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos charms visitors with the sense of isolation and the beautiful natural surroundings. Dating from the 7th century AD, this is the oldest monastery on the island.
