Santorini Island

Santorin (also Tira, Santorini, Thira) is a volcanic island in the Aegean Sea of Greece. Santorini is the southernmost island of the Cyclades archipelago.  Tira, together with the islands of Tirasia, Palea Kameni, Nea Kameni and Aspronisi, is part of the ring of islands called Santorini, which gave their name to the island. Santorini is about 150 nautical miles from Athens.

Visiting Santorin by yacht is complicated because you can leave your boat in only two places - at the Vlikada Marina in the south of the island or at the pier of Iya village located inside the horseshoe in the north-west of the island. Both sites have their advantages and disadvantages.

The island of Santorin is unlike anything else in Greece, being the remains of a massive volcanic eruption around 1450. Among tourists, the island is popular as a version of the mythical Atlantis.  The view of the setting sun from the town of Fira is a second attraction for tourists. Many cruise ships have been visiting Santorin and "crowds of tourists roam the two main towns of Santorin, Fira and Phoenicia. The prices are high, but the beauty of the island is worth it.

Many yachtsmen who have rented a charter yacht in Athens, Lavrio or on Kos or Rhodes are eager to visit Santorini.
