Tinos Attractions

The church of Virgin Mary Megalochari is the protector of all Greece. It hosts a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary and it is thought the most important religious monument in Greece. Every August, thousands of pilgrims come for pilgrimage in this church.

Traditional dovecotes are located all over the island of Tinos. They look like tiny fortresses and have geometrical patterns, which attract the doves.

The museum is housed in the same building where the famous Greek sculptor was born in Pyrgos and where he lived his last years. Many of his works are displayed in this museum as well as some of his personal belongings.

The remains of this large Sanctuary of Poseidon and the sea nymph Amphitrite date from the 4th century, but the sanctuary itself was much older. It used to be a kind of hospital, where people would come to ask for the god's help. The sanctuary is located on the way from Chora to Kionia.

This museum is housed in the complex of the Monastery of Virgin Mary, in Chora Tinos. It hosts the work of famous local painters and sculptors. In fact, Tinos is famous for its long tradition in marble sculpture.

This recently-established museum is dedicated to the work of the famous Greek artist, Kostas Tsoclis. The modern building hosts a permanent exhibition and frequently organizes art workshops for children and adults.

The Jesuit Monastery is an important religious center on Tinos. The monastery hosts an interesting folklore museum and a rich library.

The Monastery of Ursulines was established in 1862 and it worked as an educational center for young women till the mid-20th century. In the exhibition rooms of the monastery, there are laboratories of physics, chemistry, painting, music, photographs and personal items of the students.

The Archaeological Museum is located on Megalocharis Ave, on the way to the church of the Virgin Mary. It includes findings from excavations all over the island and mostly from the ancient temples of Demeter and of Poseidon.

One of the most impressive sights in Tinos is its famous marble quarries that are scattered all around the island, with the most significant ones being located on the northern side of the island.

The impressive Monastery of Kechrovouni dates from the 11th or the 12th century and it distinguishes for its architecture. This is where nun Pelagia saw a dream, which led her to find the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary. On July 23rd, the name day of nun Pelagia is celebrated.

The Art Gallery is housed in a large room in the complex of the church of the Virgin Mary. More than 100 paintings and replicas of works made by famous Greek and international artists have been exhibited in this gallery as well as paintings from the Italian and the Ionian Renaissance.

Opened in 1987, the museum is located in the village of Arnados, next to the church. The exhibits consist of old icons from various churches of the area, various ecclesiastical items, old books, and holy vestments.
