Attractions of Spetses Island

The old Harbour of Spetses called Baltiza is located at a distance of one-and-a-half kilometers way from the New Harbour, known as Dapia. It was an important shipbuilding center during the 18th and 19th century.

It is located on the right side of the old harbor and it is one of the oldest lighthouses that ever operated in Greece.

The Museum of Spetses is located in the Mansion of Hatzigianni-Mexi, a local tradesman of the 19th century. It hosts items that depict the history of Spetses from the ancient until modern times.

This private museum is housed in the home of Bouboulina and displays a collection of personal objects and household furnishing of the Spetsiote heroine. This traditional Spetsiote mansion is really interesting to visit for its collection but also for the astonishing wood-carved Florentine ceiling in the main salon. Lascarina Bouboulina is one of the few female heroes of the Greek Revolution and the most strong and commanding women in Greek history. She was born in 1771, lost her two husbands from pirate attacks and used the fortune and ships of the second one help the fight for independence.

The Anargyrios and Korgialeneios School on Spetses were funded in 1927 and was named after its benefactors Sotirios Anargyrios and Marinos Korgialeneios. When the school originally opened, it had only 4 students but by the time the institution shut down in 1983, it had many graduates that worked in Greece and abroad in important posts. Note that the school had only male students.

This is the most famous church in Spetses. It is found in a picturesque location a short walk from Dapia, the port of Spetses. It distinguishes for the tall bell tower, made of Tinian marble.

This is a gorgeous place a bit difficult to access. You can go by boat or through a track path from Agioi Anargyroi beach. It has a tiny, sandy beach inside and formations of stalactites and stalagmites.

The Church of Panagia Armata was built between 1824 and 1830 by the Spetsiote captain Ioannis Koutsis, to commemorate the defeat of the Ottoman fleet by the Greeks on the 8th of September, 1822.

The tiny chapel of Agia Paraskevi is located right on the beach with the same name. It has a traditional style and it opens only on its name day, July 26th.

This Monastery was established in the early 19th century. It is located on top of a hill and gives a great view of the town and the sea. In the cemetery in front of the monastery, there are the tombs of some very important local figures.
