Hydra Island is in the north-west Peloponnese, between the gulfs of Saronikos and Argolikos, and is separated from the Peloponnese peninsula by the Strait of Hydra. The island is mountainous and stretches from east-north-east to west-south-west. All the settlements are on the north-north-west shore facing Peloponnese.
The largest settlement on the island is the city of Hydra. It is located around the harbor and has the shape of a half-moon in plan. On the waterfront of the harbor are hotels, restaurants, markets and stores that serve tourists and locals. There is no automobile traffic on the island except for garbage trucks. Horses, donkeys, mules, and bicycles are used for transportation.
The island is connected to the mainland, particularly the port of Piraeus and other islands by ferry service.
The main yacht mooring point of the island is the port of Hydra. It is a small fishing port, constantly crowded with yachts and local fishing boats. Yachts are anchored at the waterfront with their stern or bow to the pier or at the inner side of the breakwater with their own anchor.
There are several yacht anchorages on the island. One of them is a mile east of Hydra harbor. There is a very nice quiet anchorage at the west end of the island.
