Spetses island lies in the south-eastern part of the Argolikos Gulf, near the popular yachting spot Porto Heli on the East Pelaponnesus. It is within one day's sailing from Athens.
The island is small, but very beautiful. Its ancient name was Pityousa or Pityonesos from the Greek Πίτυς - pine. This name is very good for an island covered with pine forests. In 1220 A.D. the island was conquered by the Venetians, who called it Spetsos from the Italian Spezie - Spice.
The main city and ferry port of the island is Spetses. The coast of Spetses is quite rugged with many small coves, especially on the south-west shore. However, they are suitable for overnight yachts when the weather is calm. In the town of Spetses, yachts can moor at the marina of the yacht club, but there is not much berth.
