Athens is the capital of Greece. It is located in Central Greece. It is the economic, cultural and administrative center of the country. It is named after the goddess of Wisdom Athena, who was the patron saint of the ancient polis. Athens has a rich history; during the classical period (5th century BC) the city-state reached the peak of its development, determining many trends in the development of later European culture.
Athens is home to the largest Greek port, Piraeus, through which the capital's ferry service runs to most Greek islands. In the suburbs of Athens is the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport, which connects Athens to many countries around the world and to many islands and cities in the country. The airport is connected with Athens by the highway "Attica". Travel time from the airport to Alimos Marina, where most of the charter companies of Athens are based, is about 40 minutes by car, a little longer by bus.
Athens is the recognized center of yachting in the country and the world. Athens and its surroundings are located many yachting marinas. Athens is the starting and finishing point for many yacht chartered cruises. Most of the Athenian chartered yachts sail around the Saronikos and Argolikos Gulfs and Cyclades Archipelago.
The main yachting season starts in Athens at the second half of April and ends in the second half of October.
