The shores of Turkey are washed by four seas: the Black, the Marmara, the Aegean and the Mediterranean Seas. Turkey is located in two parts of the world - in Europe and in Asia. The border between them passes through the Bosphorus Straight, the Sea of Marmara and the Dardanelles. Istanbul, which stands on both sides of the Bosphorus, is thus a European and Asian city at the same time.
In Turkey, there are excellent conditions for traveling on yachts. With chartering a yacht, you can get to incredibly beautiful places, combining the magnificence of nature and the greatness of the monuments of ancient architecture, and they can only be reached by sea. The most popular yacht centers in Turkey are Marmaris, Bodrum, Gocek and Fethie.
The Turkish Aegean coast is ideal for those who decided to try to relax on a yacht for the first time: a huge number of bays are sheltered from winds, coastal archipelago islands, where you can sail in any weather, an opportunity to have a rest at almost any time. All this makes the journey easy and enjoyable even for those first-timers who are afraid to go sailing on a yacht.
In Turkish marinas there are sailing and motor yachts of all models and classes, but, despite this, in high season, you have to take care of renting a yacht in advance (3-6 months before the trip).
The climate of the Aegean coast of Turkey is quite diverse, but it is a typical Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters. The prevailing wind is Meltemi, which blows from the northwest, but tends to move west as it moves along the coastline to the east to the Mediterranean coast of Turkey.
The main feature of the sailing travel routes on a yacht in Turkey is that they all pass along the coastline. When traveling on a rented yacht, this leads to a repetition of the distance traveled, since the yacht is rented and given back usually in the same place. However, this feature should not be viewed negatively - on the Turkish coast there are comfortable and beautiful places suitable for night berths found literally every few miles and, even after going the same way twice, you can always stop in different places.
To rent a yacht in Turkey, it is necessary that at least one crew member has a skipper's licence, recognized by the Turkish authorities - RYA, IYT, ISSA certificate, or any national certificate with the relevant category open, yacht captain diploma, etc. In general, the Turks are quite loyal to the type of license of the yacht skipper and recognize the skipper yacht management certificates issued by almost any schools. Cases of requiring a license of the radio operator when renting a yacht haven't been met. If a charter company has doubts in the skipper’s qualifications, he may be asked to show his skills in a short sea trip, being accompanied by the skipper of the charter company. In the case of an unsatisfactory result, they usually propose either to hire a local skipper or to take a small training (of course, for extra money).
The main area of travel on yachts in Turkey is the Aegean coast. Accordingly, the main bases of charter companies that provide yachts for rent or a crew-charter, are located on the Turkish coast of the Aegean Sea and on the Mediterranean coast adjacent to it from the east. We list the places (from east to west) where you can rent a yacht without crew (bareboat): Fethie, Gocek, Marmaris, Orhanie, Bodrum, Yalikovak, Kusadasi. The geography of yachts with crews is a bit wider and also includes Belek, Kemer, Antalya, Istanbul.
