Winds in Turkey

/ Home / Mediterranian / Turkey / Winds in Turkey

The climate of the Aegean coast of Turkey is quite diverse, but it is a typical Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters. The prevailing wind is Meltemi, which blows from the northwest, but tends to move westward as it moves along the coastline eastward to the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. As a rule, Meltemi starts blowing around noon, reaches its maximum strength in the afternoon, and weakens as the sun goes down. Meltemi on the Turkish coast rarely exceeds 20-25 knots, which is quite acceptable for sailing a yacht. Southern and eastern winds, which blow mainly in the winter months, can become strong and be a problem for yachtsmen. Yacht skippers should remember that there are very few shelters for yachts from these winds on the Turkish coast and should carefully plan sailings during the winter time, always taking into account weather forecasts.

For those who travel on rented yachts, we would like to remind that contracts of all charter companies state that going to sea with a wind of more than 6 points on Beaufort scale is forbidden and you, when rented a yacht, signed such a contract, even if you did not pay attention to it .
