Maiden braid. Orhaniye.

/ Home / Mediterranian / Turkey / Bodrum - Marmaris / Hisaroenue Gulf / Maiden braid. Orhaniye.

Orhaniye Bay has a unique attraction - a sand bar, along which you can almost cross from one side of the bay to the other, with the water level barely above the knee. On both sides of this spit is deep, but walking on the spit, you will feel able to walk on water as if on dry land.

There is a belief that if you make a wish to get to the end of the sand spit and go back, it will certainly come true. The sand spit is called Kizkumu, which can be translated as Maiden's Sand or Maiden's braid.

According to the legend, the scythe was poured by a girl who took the sand in her hem and threw it in front of her. She did it to meet her beloved, who lived on the other shore. But the sand was not enough and the girl could not be reunited with her beloved. In fact, the scythe consists of sand and small red pebbles. Since the scythe is reddish light, most legends associated with it have a grim hue, and usually end in the death of an unhappy girl.

On the rocks nearby you can see the remains of stonework. In ancient times, the city of Bibass was located there.

Another legend. The daughter of King Bibassus fell in love with a simple fisherman who lived on the opposite shore. At night, the girl would go ashore, give her lover a sign with a torch, and he would come to her in a boat. The girl's father found out about their meetings, and the next night the girl was forcibly brought to the shore, where the guards lit a torch and signaled to lure the young man into a trap. In an effort to warn the young man, the girl threw herself into the water, and the sand beneath her feet rose up. She ran across the sand, but before she reached the other shore, she was killed by one of the guards. She shielded herself from the young man who had come to the place by boat. Since then, the spit has had a reddish light similar to the girl's blood.

Whether it was so or not, but the enterprising Turks take tourists here, tell legends and make good money. Well, good for them.
