The main sailing area in Thailand is the Andaman Sea. The Andaman Sea was rediscovered in the early 1990s. First, in search of an incredible landscape for filming the adventures of James Bond ("The Man with the Golden Gun"), filmmakers came here, and yachtsmen who happened to be among them immediately appreciated this water area. They have found here that any yachtsman would hope to find in his travels around the world: medium strength and constant breezes, easy navigation, numerous safe anchorages for yachts in the islands, the cleanest water, a variety of choice of yacht routes, each of which is attractive, a rich underwater world and an absolutely incredible landscape - islands similar to mountains with tops jutting into the sea, tropical forests with orchids and exotic trees.
To the northeast of Phuket, where usually begins and ends the trip on rented yachts, are embedded in the crystal clear water nine islands Similan. Here you can spend a week admiring the picturesque underwater coral gardens. Not without reason, these islands belong to the top ten places in the world, beloved by divers. Phi-Phi Le Islands are just a few hours boat ride from the bustling Phuket. The island is uninhabited and only a few sea gypsies on the cliffs of the island in the caves and crevices collect the main ingredient of Thai delicacy - soup from the nests of sea swallows.
A couple of hours away from his sister island Phi-Phi Le is Phi- Phi Don with its quiet lagoons, a forest of coconut palms and spacious bungalows on the shore, where you want to live for a long time. Here is the island of Kaswa - the home of the traditional local community, whose life is absolutely untouched by the twentieth or even the nineteenth century. A centuries-old way of life in the middle of an unspoiled rainforest.
Hundreds of yachtsmen from all over the world gather in December for the most popular sailing regatta King Cap. The regatta is open not only to professionals but also to pleasure sailors. The Pan Nga Bay Regatta is also very popular. You can take part in it even on a charter yacht.

Requirements for skipper of charter yacht

Formally, according to Thai law, no documents are required to operate a sailing yacht. However, if you plan to charter a yacht for a voyage, you will have to do it in one of the charter companies, most of them are European, and they also have European requirements for a skipper - a skipper is advisable to have one of the certificates - RYA, IYT, ISSA, national certificates for sailing. In addition, almost always a skipper's resume is required. And the charter companies while deciding whether to rent a yacht without a skipper or not are guided first of all by the skipper's seiling resume. One of the biggest charter companies for example requires the skipper to have 3 years of sailing experience on yachts close in size to the yacht being chartered. A radio operator's license is usually not required.

Charter sights in Thailand

The main place for bareboat charter in Thailand is Yacht Haven Marina, located in the northeast of Phuket. Also you can rent a bareboat yacht in Pattaya, Koh Samui and Ko Chang, but the number of yachts is very limited and if you decide to rent a yacht in these places, you should do it well in advance. You can rent a bareboat yacht in Thailand from any day of the week for any number of days, but charter companies are reluctant to rent yachts for less than 5 days, and the price will be as for the week.
The main place for crewed charter is also Phuket, but not only in Yacht Haven Marina, but a number of other places on the east coast of the island. Crewed yachts in general migrate and the specific embarkation and disembarkation point needs to be coordinated with each yacht on a case by case basis. Theoretically a yacht with crew can be delivered to any place for an additional fee.
