Lake of the pregnant maiden

The local name for Lake of the Pregnant Maiden is "Dayang Bunting lake". It is located on Dayang island (Pulau Dayang), the neighboring island to Langkawi. The island is enough big (over 13 kilometers long). It is second in size in the entire Langkawi archipelago. On its territory there is a geopark that together with the lake can be explored for many days.

The peculiarity of the lake is that it is freshwater, although it is only a few tens of meters from the shore, washed by the salty waters of the ocean. In the place where tourists arrive, there is a pontoon embankment and a walking trail along the shore. If you follow the trail, you can reach a point called the Miracle Border, where the boundary between the salty ocean and the freshwater lake is only 30 meters. In the lake itself you can swim and walk on beach catamarans. In the water of the lake there are small fish, which are used in the procedures of exotic fish massage. You can put your feet in the water and enjoy a fish massage in natural conditions completely free of charge. But the most important thing about the lake is its miraculous properties, at least so the legend says.

According to local ancient legend, the forbidden love of the beautiful princess Sari and the commoner Mat Teja resulted in the birth of a child. However, the baby could not survive and died in seven days after birth. The nymphs took his body, after that the baby transformed into a white crocodile. A lake became its home, which it protected from evil forces. The princess blessed the waters of the lake and asked the higher powers to help any woman who wanted to give birth to a child. From that moment the water became fresh and remains so today. The locals sincerely believe that a sip of water from the lake or swimming in it helps to get pregnant even barren women. Whether it is true or not, you will know after you have been there.

There is a simpler legend, according to which the child was born from a bond of mystical elf creatures, and died seven days after birth. The elf mother decided to bury him in this beautiful lake, after which it became magical. Additional confirmation of the legend are the hills of the island, which resemble the profile of a pregnant woman lying on her back. These hills are always shown to tourists during a boat tour.

The scientific version of the origin of the lake is much more prosaic. Early on the site of the lake was a mountain riddled with caves. Many millions of years ago it collapsed to form a valley, which over time filled with fresh rainwater.

Open 24 hours a day.

Ticket price: entrance to the geopark - 5 ringgit / for children - 3 ringgit / excursions - from 35 ringgit.
