A 16th century Franciscan monastery

The main attraction of Vis town is the Franciscan monastery of the 16th century, the tower of the monastery was built later by hereditary stonemasons from the island of Korcula.

In the halls of the monastery today are exhibited ancient books, coins, nautical maps and various documents, such as a copy of the Atlas of Ptolemy, published in the sixteenth century. A collection of paintings by old masters, the Venetian artists Palma del Vecchio Matteo Ingoli, is also on display for tourists.

In the convent church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, there are, among others, three folds by Francesco da Santacroce and a Crucifix by Leonardo Bassano, which adorns the altar.

Under the altar is the tomb of Hannibal Lukic. The portal is adorned with a Renaissance-style relief image of the Madonna and Child, with a small inlay of precious stones, made by Nicola Fiorentinac in 1470.

The monastery is adorned by a Renaissance-style covered gallery. Also noteworthy is the cypress tree in the courtyard of the monastery - according to the locals, it is over 300 years old!

Photography and videotaping in the monastery are prohibited.
