Lastovo Island is the largest of the 46 islands of the Lastovo archipelago, located 10 miles south of the Korcula Island and 60 miles west-north-west of Vieste Harbor on the tip of the Gargano Peninsula in Italy. In addition to Lastovo, only the island of Preba is inhabited, connected by a bridge over a narrow and shallow strait to Lastovo. Lastovo is one of the most remote islands from the mainland of Croatia (the second is Vis). It is one of the reasons, why yachtsmen seek here, including charter yachts rented in Trogir, Split, Kastel and Dubrovnik.
During many years Lastovo has been a military island and yachts have only been permitted access to it for the last 20 years. This fact, as well as the relative remoteness of the island has kept it almost fully untouched. Since 2006, Lastovo and the surrounding islands have been included in the Croatian nature park Lastovsko Otocje. A daily fee per person has been applied to visit the island.
Most of the island's economy was earlier based on agriculture, especially viticulture, as well as servicing of the military. Today, tourism is becoming more important.
The island is a popular starting point for yachts arriving or departing to the Italian coast. The main yachting harbor of the island can be considered the well sheltered bay of Velji Lago, where there is a marina and anchorages, there are also equipped anchorages in Mali Lago Bay, in Zaklopatica on the northern side of the island and Skrivena Bay on the southern side of Lastovo.
