Kolocep is an island in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea, one of the Elafitski Islands, the third largest island in the archipelago. It is located five kilometers to the north-west of the port of Gruz, and one kilometer from the nearest point on the mainland. The historical name of the island is Kolomota.
This small island has amazingly beautiful nature: pine groves, cypresses, citrus orchards and vineyards, the clearest sea and beautiful beaches. There is absolutely no car traffic, so the air is absolutely clean and transparent.
The island is surrounded by clear waters, in which lobsters live, which is a distinctive feature of the island. The island is also home to conifers and olive trees.
More than 250 days a year on Colochep are sunny. The climate of the island is Mediterranean. Due to the small area and highly indented coastline, the mild climate of the island is completely determined by the influence of the Adriatic Sea. The average monthly temperature in winter is more than 10°C, and in summer does not exceed 27°C.
Archaeological artifacts from Ancient Greece, Rome and the Napoleonic era have been found on the island. On this small island, seven churches belonging to the era of medieval Croatia of the IX-XI centuries have been discovered.
In the 10th century, the island of Kolocep was part of the Dubrovnik Republic, which helped develop shipbuilding here. Two members of the crew of Christopher Columbus's ship Santa Maria were from Kolocep. The island had its peak of prosperity in the 15th century, when many churches and mansions were built, some of which have survived to this day.
There are three cafes and one store on the island. There are also several hiking trails among the cypress and citrus trees. There is a blue grotto near the rocky shores, which can be reached only by water.
