Gomera Island (La Gomera) is an island in the Canary archipelago. It has an area of 369.76 sq. km. It is part of the province of Tenerife and has a local government (island council, cabildo). The main town is San Sebastian de la Gomera.
Gomera is one island in the archipelago with no traces of volcanic activity. On the island there is a mountain range Garahonaia (the highest point - 1488 m), which is declared a national park because of the unique vegetation of the laurel forest. Due to the constant effects of trade winds, the southern side of the island is more dry and the northern side is more rainy.
The island has one marina in San Sebastian de la Gomera and two fishports in Puerto Playa de Santiago and (Puerto de Vueltas), where yachts can stay overnight.
La Gomera is located 15 miles west of Tenerife. In the strait between La Gomera and Tenerife are often seen small whales and dolphins. So yachtsmen traveling in the Canary archipelago are trying to get here.
