Murter Island is located off the mainland coast of Croatia, 10 miles west-north-west of Sibenik and 23 miles south-east of Zadar. Murter is separated from the mainland on the north-east side by a narrow and shallow (minimum depth of 2.4 meters) channel near the town of Tisno. In this location, the island is connected to the mainland by an lifting road bridge, so yachts with a draft of just over two meters or less can use this way.
Despite being one of the smaller islands, Murter is exceptionally well suited for yacht travel. It has three marinas, a well-equipped boatyard and several anchorages on different sides of the island. All of the Murter Island marinas provide some degree of shelter to yachts from the bora, the best in the Jezera Murter marina, which is sheltered from almost all winds.
The island is popular in the summer as an overnight stopover for yachts traveling from the mainland to the Kornati archipelago. The island's main town, Murter Town, is located in a wide bay on the north side of the island, sheltered from the north winds by a chain of small islands.
