The city of Umag is located on the west coast of the Istria peninsula in Croatia, very close to the border with Slovenia. Umag is connected by a regular intercity bus service to other major Croatian cities, as well as to Italy and Slovenia. From Umag there is a highway along the coast of Istria towards Porec, Rovinj and Pula. Umag is located about six miles south-west of the Slovenian port of Portoroz and ten miles north of the port of Novigrad.
Like many harbors along the coast of Slovenia and Istria, Umag was originally an ancient island settlement that had passed through the hands of the Byzantines, Lombards and Franks before becoming part of the Republic of Venice by 1269.
There is ACI yacht marina in Umag, which also offers yachtsmen mooring at buoys located in the head of the bay. Also, yachts can be moored to the city's waterfront of Umag.
