Losinj island lies off the Croatian mainland coast, west of the island of Cres, to which it was once attached and from which it is now separated by a narrow channel in the town of Osor on Cres.
Losinj is a popular tourist destination, especially in July and August, when many Italian tourists stream to the island via a regular ferry service from Venice. The main town of the island, Mali Losinj, is also the main port of entry in this part of Croatia and thus so often yachts coming from the Italian coast come into port. The island has a lot of convenient yacht anchorages, both wild and well-tended. This is also one of the reasons for the large number of yachts in the island's waters.
Yacht marinas on the island are located in Luka Mali Losinj, which stretches from north-west to south-east for almost three miles. The narrow entrance to the bay is located at its north-western end. In the middle of the bay there is a channel with a drawbridge (open twice a day) that leads to the north-east coast of the island. Yacht anchorages are concentrated in the south-eastern part of the bay.
