Sestrunj island is located off the Croatian mainland coast nine miles north-west of the city of Zadar. The island is about midway between the north-western ends of the larger Ugljan and Dugi Otok islands. The island is small - it is just under four square miles and relatively low. It is permanently inhabited by about 50 residents. In the summer, however, the island is crowded with tourists from the mainland. There are three villages on the island, two of which are on the coast: Kablin, located on the south-west coast of the island just over a mile north of its southern tip, and Hrvatin on the north-east, where is located the island's ferry port. These two harbors are visited by yachts. The tiny harbor of Kablin offers good shelter from the prevailing north-west winds, but it is open to south winds, and Hrvatin is sheltered from south winds, but open to north winds.
The main village of the island, Sestrunj is in the center of the island, about an equal distance from the two harbors. It has a church, a supermarket and two restaurants.
