Karlobag is located on the mainland coast of Croatia in Velebitski Channel, opposite the island of Pag and under Velebit mountains.
The harbor is quite open and does not offer good shelter. It is a place to be avoided if there is a risk of bora or any fresh winds from north-west to south-east. However, in calm stable weather it is an interesting, rarely visited place by yachts.
Yachts approach Karlobag either from the north-west through the Velebitski Channel from the northern tip of the island of Pag, or from the south-east through the narrow but deep Lubacka Vrata Channel, over which there is a bridge that connects Pag with the mainland. The bridge has an air gap of 28 meters. In the approach from the north-west coast, it is worth keeping at least half a mile offshore to avoid the shoals that stretch for several miles along the coast to the north-west of Karlobag. There are no dangers in the approach from the south-east. The town and church bell tower are visible at some distance.
Yachts can be moored at one of the two piers on the waterfront, except on the north-west side of the north pier, where the ferries arrive. Depths along the piers range from 2.0 m at the waterfront to 3.0 m at the outer end.
In calm weather, yachts can be anchored in the bay to the east of the city. Here, the depth is 12.0 to 15.0 meters.
