The resort of Novi Vinodolski in the Kvarner Bay is famous for its surrounding fine pebble beaches and beautiful slopes surrounded by green forests, as well as for the rich historical and cultural heritage of the Kvarner region.
The first mention of the town as a political and cultural center of Vinodol Duchy dates back to 1288. In 1878 the beautiful nature, the temperate climate of the Mediterranean, the clean air and the clear sea water made Novo Vinodolski the second most important resort of the country after Opatija - the main tourist center in the Kvarner region.
The name of the city comes from the word Vinodol (wine valley), which is located to the west of the city and is known for its extensive vineyards.
The old part of Novi Vinodolski is built in typical Mediterranean style - stone houses with white facades and red roofs. Novi Vinodolski, like most Croatian seaside towns, flows smoothly from the mountain to the sea.
The cultural heritage of Novi Vinodolski region is varied and fascinating. Visitors to Novi Vinodolski can see the ancient walls of the Roman fortress Lopsica, the ruins of the former Pauline monastery, Frankopan castle with the tower, the legendary castle Nehaj, the Cathedral, the Church of the Holy Trinity,
and the church of St. Marin on the small island of the same name,
house-museum of famous Croatian writers - Majuranic brothers, public library and reading room from 1845, museum and city gallery Turnac, unique Glass Chapel, Old Center of Novi Vinodolski which preserved a unique atmosphere of old Kvarner Croatia.
In Novi Vinodolski, in 1288, one of the first Croatian laws (written in Glagolitic alphabet), the Vinodolski zakonik, was adopted.
The main attraction of Novi Vinodolski region is Frankopan Castle
The Frankopan Castle is the castle of the Frankopan princely family who ruled the town and the entire Gorski Kotar in the Middle Ages. The castle was built in the XIII century;
Franciscan monastery was built in the twelfth century and later rebuilt several times;
Cathedral Church of St. Philip and St. Jacob was built in the 14th century and rebuilt in the 18th century in Baroque style. Next to the church is a bell tower;
Church of the Holy Trinity was built in the early fifteenth century.
Bishop's Residence is an old building in the central square of Novi Vinodolski opposite the Cathedral.
Novi Vinodolski is also a modern tourist resort.
