/ Home / Mediterranian / Croatia / Split - Zadar / Tribunj / History and attractions of Tribunj town

The original village was located on a hill St. Mikula, at the top was built medieval fortress Jurjevgrad. According to a fortress was village named since the founding of the diocese of Sibenik in 1298 until the end of the 17th century.

Today Tribunj is built on the island, which was later connected to the mainland by a stone bridge. It was first mentioned in 1463 under the name Tribohunj. Place on the island is changing names as Trebic, Trebiste, Trebunj, Tribohunj, Tribohum, Trebocconi (Venetian name from 1684, meaning three pieces). It is not clear whether the name of the village is derived from the name of the pagan sun god of the Croats or from the Slavic word meaning "place of sacrifice." At the beginning of the 20th century were uncovered remnants of defensive walls of the strength Jurjevgrad from the mid 17th century, which were built during the Venetian government to defend against the Turks.

Tribunj Old Town

The old town is the absolute heart and, at the same time, the most important attraction of Tribunj.

It is situated in a dreamlike location on a small island and is only connected to the mainland by an old stone bridge. Here, the old Dalmatian town houses and the small alleyways conjure up an extraordinarily charming flair and the many good restaurants and cafés right by the sea invite you to linger.

During the year, many events take place in the town center, such as the famous donkey race in August.

Many various music and dance events are held here in the summer months.

Mount Sveti Nikola

One of the absolute best things to do in Tribunj is a visit to Mount Sveti Nikola. This 60 meter high hill rises directly behind the old town of the former fishing village and the church of the same name, Sveti Nikola that was built in 1452, is also one of the town’s most important landmarks.

The 10-minute climb to the top is entertaining and once you’ve reached the peak, you’ll experience probably the best view of Tribunj.

This magical place is also absolutely recommendable during sunset!

The Promenade of Tribunj

The picturesque promenade of Tribunj is so beautiful and absolutely worth seeing. It leads from the marina to the historic town center and on to Zamalin Beach in the north of the resort.

Along the romantic coastal path, there are always places to stop for refreshments, such as restaurants and cafes. It is also interesting to take a walk in the morning, when the fishermen come in from the sea and sell their fresh catch along the promenade.

Promenade Setnice Luna – Zamalin

Between the old town of Tribunj and the main beach Zamalin there is one more promenade.

Along this promenade, there are many different small bathing spots, which enchant above all with wonderful peace and quiet, a unique ambience and a lot of privacy.
