Puerto de Mogan is a resort in the south-western part of Gran Canaria. It is the central city of the municipality of Mogan, with an area of 172.43 square kilometers and a population of about 23 thousand people.

Earlier Puerto de Mogan was  small fishing village founded about 200 years ago. At that time it was called Playa de Mogan. But the valley has an ancient history dating back to prehistoric times. Archaeological excavations have uncovered evidence that people lived in this area several thousands of years ago.

The resort, as you can see it now, was built in the 1980s. The modern history of the city began with the arrival to Gran Canaria of the Spanish artist Rafael Neville Rubio-Arguelles, the fifth Count of Berlang. He was an aristocrat and had splendid taste. He had previously designed Port Rafael in Sardinia.

His creations were unusual canals and two-story buildings above them in the Canarian-Andalusian style.

Some elements of traditional Italian architecture, a network of canals and bridges made the city called the "Venice of the Canaries". Building of the resort began in 1980 and was completed in 1988.

Now it is a very picturesque town with bright buildings, streets with blooming bougainvillea, a modern harbor and a developed tourist infrastructure.

Puerto Mogán is a popular European resort, but the town maintains a relaxed atmosphere because it is not as crowded as neighboring towns.

The town consists of two parts: the old unsightly fishing village, located near the rocks and the new part with the harbor, hotels and restaurants.

Sea Harbor

One of the local attractions of Puerto de Mogán is the port, where yachts on their way from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean are moored, pleasure boats and ferries.

The port has 255 berths, where fishing boats are neighbors of luxury yachts. From here you can take a boat tour along the southern coast of Gran Canaria.

Also in the harbor are offered such a fascinating attraction as a ride on a yellow submarine.

The coast in the area is very picturesque, it is popular with underwater photographers. Puerto Mogan holds international competitions in these sports. The ferries Lineas Blue Bird and Lineas Salmon come to the port. They run between Puerto Mogan and Puerto Rico, Argyne and Anfey del Mar.

Archaeological Park Canada de los Gatos

It is an interesting place Canada de los Gatos in Puerto Mogan for those who are interested in history and archaeology. It is located behind the Cordial Mogan Playa Hotel. 1300 years ago there was a settlement that dates back to the pre-Hispanic period. The artefacts found during the excavations allow you to learn more about the life and livelihood of the indigenous people of Gran Canaria.

Excavations at this site have been conducted since the 19th century, but the most extensive excavations took place between 2010 and 2015. It found the remains of 19 buildings, graves, burial caves, human remains and everyday objects. Canada de los Gatos is recognized as a cultural heritage site and is open to the public.
