The island of Poros is located off the south-west coast of Saronikos Gulf, 25 miles south-west of Athens. Poros is a favorite vacation spot for middle-class Athenians and every weekend there is a rowdy party on the island. Poros is connected by ferry to Athens and to Galatas, a resort village in the Peloponnese near Poros. Ferries go here several times an hour.
The most popular and visited is the southern part of the island, where on a small peninsula is the town of Poros. Poros is separated from the mainland by a narrow and shallow strait, densely moored with local yachts on dead anchors.
The town has a fairly well-appointed marina for several dozen yachts, and there is an anchorage opposite. Poros Bay is almost completely fenced of island from the sea, so it has no waves, although strong north and northwest winds can be a nuisance for yachts in the marina.
There are several popular well-protected anchorages near the town of Poros, which are a good alternative to mooring overnight in a marina by the bustling city.
A popular boat show is held every year at the Poros marina.
