Fort Charlotte

Fort Charlotte

Fort Charlotte is a British colonial-era fort built on a hill overlooking Kingstown Harbor. The fort is located at the beginning of Edinboro Road on Berkshire Hill, west of the city.

Located 601 feet above sea level, Fort Charlotte is Saint Vincent's premier fortification of the early 19th century. The fort offers panoramic views of the leeward side of the island, including Kingstown, Young Island, the Caribbean Sea, Bequia, and the Grenadines. On a clear day, you can see Grenada 90 miles to the south.

After recapturing the island in 1763 from the French, the British began building a fort, which was completed by 1806. It was built to protect against French attack, Caribbean unrest, and slave rebellion.

At various times the fortress was used as an almshouse, a leprosarium, a psychiatric hospital, and a prison.

Some of the old barracks (officers' quarters) now accommodate a small museum with a colorfully painted history of black Caribs.

You can visit Fort Charlotte when you leave your yacht at the Blue Lagoon Marina or at Ottley Knoll Harbor.
