Phi Phi is a small archipelago between the mainland and Phuket and belongs to Krabi province. The islands of Phi-Phi consist of the two main islands (Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Le) and four smaller islands: Mai Phai, Bida Nok, Bida Nai, Yung.
Phi Phi Don is the largest and only inhabited island of the archipelago. Its area is 28 sq. km. Phi Phi Don consists of two limestone monoliths joined by a sand spit about a kilometer long and about 150 meters wide.
On the spit is the main settlement of Tonsai and on the side of Ton-Sai Bay there is a pier capable of receiving small ships and in the bay itself there are many moorings buoys for yachts.
The islands were hit hard by the tsunami in December 2004, when about 2,000 people were killed. The archipelago is famous for being the location for the filming of the movie "The Beach" starring Leonardo Di Caprio.
