History
The history of Vodice goes back several centuries. The first settlements on its territory were recorded during the Iron Age. The first mention in chronicles dates back to 1402, and it is associated with the technology of rainwater capture in a natural reservoir at the foot of Mount Romana.
Later the town survived several wars, but they could not ruin the charm of this town. This town, like many Croatian towns, was ruled by the Romans, the Austrians, the Turks and the Italians. The second language almost officially used here is Italian, as the Italian rule was the longest and most significant.
Attractions
The beautiful old town of Vodice is located just above the harbor.
Small picturesque streets and alleys lead through a labyrinth of typical Dalmatian stone houses that characterize the heart of the historic old town of Vodice. Small stores and boutiques invite you to enter it.
If you want to comfortably observe the bustle of the old town, you can take a seat on the terrace of one of the many cafes and restaurants.
Parish Church of the Holy Cross - Sv. Kriz
The Parish Church of the Holy Cross (Sv. Kriz), built in 1746 by the famous craftsman Ivan Skok, is one of the most important Baroque buildings in Dalmatia.
In 1725 Skok worked on the aisle above the main altar, which later went into the expansion of the church. Building of the bell tower took 20 years and began in 1752. The harmonious facade with its magnificent baroque portal and rosettes was dedicated to the Holy Cross.
Choric Tower
In the center of the old town, just a few meters from the parish church of Sv. Krize, is the tower of Choric, which still bears witness to the former fortifications that defended the town from invaders in the 16th century.
The building was initiated by the Saracini family. It is believed that the coat of arms with the initials HS on the east side of the tower is attributed to Jerome Saracin. In the 17th century, the tower became the property of the noble family Fondra from Sibenik, who transformed the tower into a residential building.
Okit Hill and the church of Gospa od Karmela
Behind Vodice rises Okit Hill, to the top of which a good trail leads. The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel stands on the top of Okit Hill. Built in the 17th century, the church has been destroyed several times during the centuries.
The current design of the church was created by the famous architect Nikola Bazic, who also designed the Sea Organ and the Sun Salutation square in Zadar.
The old Vodice park is also very beautiful. The small green park above the old town invites to linger under the shady trees during hot summer days.
Also noteworthy is the simple Gothic church of Sveti Kriz, built in 1402 in the south-west of Vodice.
Archaeology lovers will be interested in the remains of the Roman cistern and the settlement Rakitnica.
