The island of Ugljan stretches from north-west to south-east for about 12 miles, the width of the island is on average two miles. The island is separated from the mainland by the fairly deep navigable Strait of Zadar, the width of which varies from two to three miles. Opposite the middle of the island on the mainland is Zadar city. In the south-east, Ugljan island is separated by a narrow strait Zdrelac from Pasman island. The islands are connected by a road bridge with a height of 16.5 meters above the water. The depth of the strait is about 5 meters.
The coastline of Ugljan Island is about 40 miles long. Most of the island's settlements are located on the north-east coast of the island in small bays, mostly open to north winds. On the same coast there are two yacht marinas and a very sheltered fisheaport Kuklica, where about 80 yachts can be moored to the piers. In the south-east of the island there is a large bay with several coves where yachts can be sheltered from the prevailing winds. The middle part of the south-west coast is smooth and steep, only closer to the north-western tip of the island there is a small bay Prtlug, where yachts can be anchored.
The island's proximity to Zadar makes it a popular summer weekend destination, and its every hourly ferry service allows a significant number of residents to go to work in the big city. Ugljan is one of the most densely populated islands in Croatia. Islanders live in 8 villages - Preko, Ugljan, Lukoran, Sutomiscica, Poljana, Kali, Osljak and Kukljica. Ugljan is the largest settlement of the island, about 1000 inhabitants.
