Split is the second largest city in Croatia after the capital Zagreb and has been the most important city on the Adriatic coast of Dalmatia since Roman times. The importance of the city received a new impetus in the third century AD, when the Roman emperor Diocletian, wheh he ended his rule, chose it as the site for his magnificent palace, much of which is preserved today.
Modern Split is a dynamic commercial and tourist center, with several excellent museums (including Diocletian's Palace), a famous forest park, excellent ferry connections, road and air transport to many of Croatia's islands and international destinations and excellent yachting facilities. In the yacht marina ACI Split is based many charter companies providing yachts for rent.
Split and Kastela, located three miles north of Split in Kastela Bay are the largest yacht rental base in Croatia. Yachts coming to Split have the option of mooring at the bustling waterfront in the main harbor, at the ACI marina Split, and at the Zenta yacht marinas a mile to the east or Spinut and Poljud on the north side of the peninsula on which the city is situated. These three marinas are operated by several yacht clubs, but visitors are welcome if berths are available.
