Maio Island (Maio means "May") is the easternmost of the Leeward Group of Cape Verde Islands, located 42 miles south of Boa Vista and 15 miles east of Santiago Island.
Maio Island is an ancient volcano, sleeping for thousands of years and susceptible to wind erosion.
The island's main town and port, Vila do Maio, is located on the south-west (leeward) coast. Here, in the area of the port, is the only acceptable anchorage for yachts.
