Madeira is the main island of the Madeira archipelago. It is located in the North Atlantic Ocean, about 500 miles south-west of the Portuguese mainland and 400 miles west of the African coast. The island stretches from west to east. The island is 31 miles long and 12 miles wide.
The capital and largest city is Funchal, it is located on the southern coast of Madeira. Funchal has an international airport.
The port of Funchal receives cruise ships from Europe and America. Funchal is connected by ferry to Porto Santo, the second inhabited island of the Madeira archipelago.
The coastline of the island is smooth. All marinas, ports and anchorages are on the leeward side of the island.
Funchal is one of the two marinas on Madeira. It is home to charter companies where you can rent a yacht to sail around the islands of the archipelago.
