Gela is a town in south-western Sicily, in the province of Caltanissetta, a port on the Gulf of Gela at the estuary of the river Gela. The city, from which the vast surrounding plain and the wide bay from which it emerges takes its name, is an important agricultural, industrial and maritime center. Gela was founded in 1233 by Frederick II on the site of ancient Gela, and was called Terranova until 1927. The town, predominantly of modern construction, is home to a large oil refinery.

Yachts can find a berth at one of the four pontoons in the inner part of the harbor. Depths at the pontoons range from 2.5 to 3.0 meters. The shelter here is good, although there can be ripples in strong southerly winds.

The city has a rich history. It was founded in 689 BC. Today the ruins of the acropolis and several churches from different eras have been preserved.
