Ancona is a city and seaport on the Adriatic coast in the Marche region of Central Italy, with a population of about one hundred thousand. Ancona is the capital of the province of Ancona and the region.
Ancona is one of the main ports of the Adriatic Sea, especially in terms of passenger traffic, as well as the main economic and demographic center of the region.
The hilly nature around Ancona contrasts sharply with the flatter coastline in areas further north.
Ancona took on a more urban form thanks to Greek settlers from Syracuse around 387 BC, who gave it its name: Ancona means “elbow” in Greek. The bay to the east of the city was originally protected only by the elbow-shaped cape on the north.
There are quite a few sights in Ascona, which are not badly preserved.
There is a large yacht marina in the town.
