Strictly speaking, Lignano is an island separated from the mainland by the river Fiume Tagliamento and the artificial channel Tagliamento. On the south-eastern side of Lignano, facing the sea, is the resort town of Lignano Sabbiadoro, which stretches along the entire peninsula. Lignano's Adriatic coastline is a continuous sandy beach, which is the reason for the resort.
Yachtsmen are interested in Lignano primarily as a place to stop for a night on the way from Slovenia to Venice. There are five marinas on the peninsula, which offer a total of approximately five thousand berths for yachts on the water.
