The island of Salamin (or Salamis), the largest of the islands of the Saronikos Gulf, is located in the north-east corner of the gulf, near the port of Piraeus. The island is connected to the mainland by a short (less than 2 miles) ferry from Polukia (Salomin Island) to Perama (mainland). Ferries to Polukia also going from Piraeus. Polukia is the main ferry and commercial port of the island.
The island of Salomin, due to its proximity to Athens, is a holiday destination for Greeks. Foreign tourists, including yachtsmen, do not visit it as often as other large islands in the Gulf of Saronix, such as Aegina or Poros. The island is the main base of the Greek Navy, so the entrance to a number of bays of the island by yachts and other vessels is prohibited.
One of the most famous battles of antiquity took place at Salamis, where the Greeks under the leadership of Themistocles defeated the Persian fleet in 480 BC.
